Stage Description

Leaving behind the monumental Cáceres, this long and solitary stage ventures into the heart of the Extremaduran heathland. The road follows the ancient Roman route, passing by the famous milestone of the Via Plata. It is a journey of great scenic beauty but very demanding due to distance and lack of services. The pilgrim must be self-sufficient. The route ends in the vicinity of the impressive Alcántara Dam, an immense freshwater lake that transforms the landscape. The end of stage is usually some rural accommodation near the dam.
The stage that emerges from Cáceres is one of the longest and most solitary on the entire Via de la Plata. It's a journey for those who love big spaces and introspection. The road leaves the city and immerses itself in the Extremaduran plain, a landscape of oak trees and pastures of serene beauty. The route follows the ancient Roman road faithfully, and the pilgrim can walk on original sections and see several milestones that marked distances. The most famous milestone is the Milestone of the Via de la Plata. The main difficulty of the stage is its length and the total absence of towns and intermediate services. It's essential to bring water and food for the entire day. The end of the journey arrives at the shores of the Alcántara Dam, created by a dam over the Tajo River. This massive body of water split the old road in two. The final stage is located near the dam, where there are some rural accommodations that offer a well-deserved rest in a natural spectacular setting.
