Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

This stage marks the entry into Galicia and is one of the most spectacular on the route. It begins with a ferry crossing over the River Miño to A Guarda. From there, the road follows a coastal path that skims along the coast, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic. The route passes by the Monastery of Oia, nestled alongside the sea, and by the historic town of Baiona. This is a long day with a "steep" profile, but one of unforgettable beauty. The destination, Porto Mougás, is a small port that offers a peaceful retreat in the heart of Rías Baixas.
This long stage condenses the essence of the entry into the Portuguese Coastal Way in Galicia. The journey begins with an exciting ferry crossing from Caminha to A Guarda. Once on land, it is highly recommended to climb Monte Santa Trega to visit its Celtic castle and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views. The official route heads north, following a spectacular coastal path. The profile is a continuous up-and-down that adapts to the relief of the cliffs. The next milestone is the Cistercian monastery of Santa María de Oia, an architectural jewel built as a fortress against pirate attacks. The route continues until the historic town of Baiona, Europe's first port to receive news of the Discovery of America. Its Parador-fortress of Monterreal is a must-visit destination. The final stretch takes the pilgrim to the small and tranquil port of Mougás, a perfect place to rest after an intense and full of marvellous landscape and historical sights journey.
