Stage Description

This is the queen stage of the Madrid Way, an impressive high mountain traverse that crosses the Sierra de Guadarrama. The path ascends along the historic Roman Road of Fuenfría, in a beautiful pine forest environment. After reaching the summit, over 1,700 meters, it begins a long descent down the Segovian slope. The journey is demanding but the reward is immense: arriving at the monumental city of Segovia, with its Aqueduct, Alcázar and Cathedral, is one of the most unforgettable moments of any pilgrimage.
The stage that unites Cercedilla with Segovia is the heart of the Madrid Route and one of the most beautiful mountain crossings of the Santiago Ways in Spain. The journey focuses on crossing the Sierra de Guadarrama by the historic Puerto de la Fuenfría. The ascent from Cercedilla follows the route of a magnificently preserved Roman road, which winds its way through a dense forest of wild pine. It is an exigent climb but of breathtaking beauty. As altitude is gained, views are spectacular. At the top of the port, 1,790 meters high, the pilgrim finds himself at a historic crossroads. From here, a long descent down the Segovian slope begins. The path follows forest tracks, passing by the Fountain of the Queen in an environment of great tranquility. The final stretch approaches Segovia, and the pilgrim is greeted by the majestic silhouette of the city. Arrival at the feet of its Roman aqueduct, a prodigious work of engineering, is the precursor to the wonder that awaits in its old town: the fairytale Alcázar and the elegant Gothic Cathedral.
