Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
This stage marks the exit from Baztán Valley. The journey involves ascending to Belate Pass, a long and demanding climb along an ancient pilgrimage route. The landscape is of great beauty, with beech forests and panoramic views. After topping the pass, a long descent leads the pilgrim into Ultzama Valley. It's a tough but rewarding stage.
The stage that connects Berroeta with Olagüe is one of the most difficult stages of the Baztan Route. The pilgrim faces the crossing of Belate Pass, a historic mountain pass. The ascent is long and demanding, and takes place for the most part along a path that traverses an impressive beech forest. As altitude increases, views are breathtaking. At the top of the pass, remains can be seen of an old pilgrims' hospital, which attest to the difficulty of this stage in the past. Beyond the high point, a long descent begins towards the Ultzama valley. The landscape changes, and forests give way to meadows and a smoother terrain. Arrival at Olagüe, a small village in the valley, is the end of the stage. It offers basic services for the pilgrim and a well-deserved rest after an ascent of high mountain.
