Stage Description
Leaving behind the monumental Bilbao, this stage follows the course of the estuary until its mouth into the sea. The route is flat and urban, crossing the old industrial zone of the estuary. Arrival in Portugalete, with its impressive Hanging Bridge, World Heritage Site, is a spectacular end to the stage. It's a day to enjoy the history of the estuary's industry and the majesty of iron engineering.
The Bilbao to Portugalete stage is a 12km short journey that follows the course of the estuary until its mouth into the sea. The route starts in Bilbao (10m) and follows a mainly flat profile with a gentle ascent towards Portugalete (20m). The route passes through the old industrial area of the estuary, on an urban and peri-urban walk. It is a peaceful and easy walk that allows you to enjoy the scenery and arrive in time to explore the destination town. The arrival at Portugalete, with its impressive Hanging Bridge, World Heritage Site, is a spectacular final stage. This stage combines gentle exercise with rich historical experience, a perfect balance on the North Way.
