Stage Description
A stage that ends in Amboise, the town on the Loire where Leonardo da Vinci spent his final years as a guest of Francis I. The roughly 21 km skirt the Loire and the vineyards. Amboise is home to the Château Royal d'Amboise (with Leonardo's tomb in the chapel of Saint-Hubert) and the Clos Lucé, the residence where the Italian genius lived and worked between 1516 and 1519.
The Way continues along the left bank of the Loire and passes from Loir-et-Cher into Indre-et-Loire, that is, into historic Touraine. The stage to Amboise is short and gentle, with barely an undulation where the route leaves the river to climb onto the vine-covered slope.
Rilly-sur-Loire and Mosnes are the first villages of the day, riverside settlements of pale stone and slate, with churches of Romanesque origin and winegrowers' houses. The route alternates between the levee, with open views over the Loire, and tracks among vineyard plots of the Touraine-Amboise appellation.
Tufa, the soft white limestone from which the châteaux of the region were built, marks the landscape of this section. Old quarries opened in the hillsides have been turned into wine cellars and troglodyte dwellings, very visible when passing through Chargé, the last village before the stage end.
Amboise is announced by the bulk of its royal château, perched on a spur above the river. A favourite residence of Charles VIII and François I, it was one of the gateways through which the Renaissance entered France. Within its precinct stands the chapel of Saint-Hubert, where the remains attributed to Leonardo da Vinci lie; he spent his last three years at the nearby Clos Lucé as a guest of the king.
The town, lively and with plenty of accommodation and restaurants, invites an afternoon spent strolling the pedestrian street beneath the Tour de l'Horloge, the quays and the château gardens. It is one of the most rewarding stage ends in the Loire valley.
