Stage Description

Leaving behind the monumental Coimbra, this stage enters the Bairrada region, famous for its wines. It's a long and flat journey that takes place mostly on the agricultural plain of the Mondego River. The route passes through a landscape of fields and vineyards with some sections through eucalyptus forests. This is a transition phase, which moves the pilgrim away from the city's bustle to return him to the tranquility of Portuguese countryside. The destination is the small village of Sernadelo, an ideal retreat for rest.
Leaving historic Coimbra implies a long urban walk to leave the city behind. Once in open countryside, the stage ventures into a flat area, on a route with hardly any inclines that allows for rapid progress. The landscape is dominated by rice and maize fields of the Mondego valley. The path passes through the local town of Mealhada, famous throughout Portugal for its "leitão assado" (roasted suckling pig), a gastronomic delight that many pilgrims cannot miss. After Mealhada, the route ventures into the Bairrada wine region. The terrain becomes slightly more undulating, with gentle hills covered in vineyards. The final stage ends in the small and tranquil village of Sernadelo, a place that offers peace and hospitality necessary to recover from a long journey. It is an episode that combines agricultural landscape with wine culture and gastronomy, showing another side of rural Portugal.
