Stage Description
This is one of the longest and most symbolic stages of the Way of Saint James. The route enters French Basque Country, with a landscape of green hills and charming villages. It's a journey of great beauty and challenge. Arrival in Ostabat is a very special moment, as here three of France's major Jacobean routes converge: the Via Turonensis, Via Podiensis, and Via Lemovicensis. It's a crossroads for pilgrims, a prelude to crossing the Pyrenees.
The Orthez to Ostabat stage is one of the longest and most symbolic sections of the Via Lemovicensis, a 43km marathon that ventures into French Basque Country. The route starts in Orthez (70m) and follows an undulating profile with a gentle ascent towards Ostabat (150m). The route traverses a beautiful landscape with green hills and charming villages. It is an demanding hike due to its length, but it rewards with the beauty of its scenery and the symbolism of destiny. Arrival in Ostabat is a very special moment as here three of France's major Jacobean routes converge. It is a crossroads for pilgrims, a precursor to crossing the Pyrenees.
