Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

First stage of the Castilian-Aragonese Way, Jacobean route that links Zaragoza with the French Way via Soria. The 18 km link Gallur with Borja through the region of Campo de Borja, an Aragonese wine region famous for its garnacha grapes. The landscape combines vineyards, almond trees and cereal fields irrigated by the Ebro and its tributaries. Borja is the historic capital of the region, with a medieval old town and the hermitage of Misericordia (internationally famous for the restoration of the Ecce Homo).
This long stage is the departure of Catalonia on the Way of St James, an demanding route with slopes that enters into the interior of Aragon. The path crosses a landscape of steppes and forests, with panoramic views of the mountains. The arrival in Borja, a village with a rich Mudéjar and Renaissance heritage, is a monumental final stage. It's a stage that requires good physical preparation, but rewards with a first-class destination.
