Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
This stage marks the official beginning of the Camino Sanabrés, saying goodbye to the Vía de la Plata. It is a long and solitary journey that crosses the cereal plain of the Zamoran Land of Fields. The road, almost flat and without shade, runs along dirt tracks in an endless landscape of horizons. The pilgrim must well plan the stage, as services are scarce. Arrival at Tábara, a village with a deep history linked to its ancient monastery and famous saints, is a cultural reward after a total immersion in the meseta.
The start of the Camino Sanabrés in Granja de Moreruela is a moment of decision and change. The pilgrim leaves the main trail of the Via de la Plata to take a northwest route that will lead him directly to Galicia. This first stage of 25.3 km is an immersion into the Campo de Zamora region, a vast plain of austere yet breathtaking beauty.
The route runs along endless dirt tracks surrounded by a sea of cereal fields that change color with the seasons. It's a landscape of open horizons and vast skies, where solitude and silence are the main companions on the journey. The almost total absence of trees makes it essential to bring sun protection and plenty of water, especially outside of spring.
The path passes near Faramontanos de Tábara before arriving at the destination. Arrival in Tábara is a special moment. This village had immense importance during the High Middle Ages due to its Monastery of San Salvador, which housed one of Europe's most important scriptoriums. It was there that some of the most beautiful manuscripts from the time were illuminated, the famous Beatos de Tábara. Although only the church of Santa María remains from the original monastery, with its imposing Romanesque tower, the weight of history is felt in every corner. Tábara offers the pilgrim all the necessary services for a well-deserved rest.
