Stage Description

The final stage of the South Portuguese Way trail ends in the spectacular city of Porto. It is a short and mostly urban journey that allows pilgrims to arrive on time to explore one of Europe's most beautiful cities. The entrance to Porto, crossing the iconic Luis I Bridge over the Douro River with views of Ribeira and Vila Nova de Gaia wine cellars, is unforgettable. Arrival at Porto Cathedral (Sé), the final point of the stage, is the reward for all the accumulated effort since Lisbon.
The stage leading to Porto is the culmination of a long journey from Lisbon. It's a short walk, of an eminently urban character, that serves to enter into the second largest city in Portugal. The route passes through the southern periphery, passing by Vila Nova de Gaia, the city located on the opposite bank of the Douro and famous for its Port wine cellars. The final approach is spectacular. The pilgrim crosses the river at the upper level of the iconic Bridge Don Luis I, a work of iron from the 19th century attributed to a disciple of Eiffel. The views from the bridge are among the most famous in the world: on one side, the labyrinth of rooftops of Porto's Ribeira; on the other, the wine cellars of Gaia. The arrival at Porto's Sé (Cathedral), an imposing Romanesque fortress church, marks the end of the stage. Porto, whose historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a city to get lost in: the Ribeira, the Tower of Clérigos, Lello Bookstore... A monumental and vibrant final stage.
