Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

As it leaves the monumental Oporto, this stage enters its metropolitan area, on a route that combines urban stretches with the first rural landscapes. It is a long and asphalt-heavy journey that requires patience from the pilgrim to get away from the big city. The route passes through several towns and follows in part ancient roads. As the day progresses, the surroundings become more green and tranquil. The arrival at the small village of Vilarinho offers well-deserved rest and the first contact with the hospitality of rural Portugal in the north.
Leaving Porto is a logistical challenge. The stage is long and the first kilometers are a maze of streets and industrial areas. It's essential to follow the yellow arrows carefully not to get lost. The route seeks out the most tranquil possible routes to leave the city, passing through towns like Maia. As the pilgrim moves away from the center, the landscape changes. Asphalt gives way to dirt roads and stone pavement sections, and buildings are replaced by fields of cultivation, vineyards, and eucalyptus forests. It's a transition phase that requires patience but ultimately rewards with arrival at rural and authentic Portugal. The end of the day in Vilarinho, a small parish, offers a total contrast to the starting point. Its hostels and rural houses provide the peace and rest needed after an demanding journey.
