Stage Description

Continuing through the heart of the Burgalesian tableland, this 21-kilometer stage offers a similar landscape to the previous day, with plains and open horizons. The road passes through the small village of Hontanas, which appears suddenly in a valley, a true oasis of greenery and hospitality in the midst of the steppes. A little later, the route goes along the ruins of the Convent of St. Anthony, with its Gothic arch under which the Way still passes today. The main difficulty of the day is the ascent to Mostelares Hill, a short but intense climb that offers breathtaking views of the region and the village of Castrojeriz, with the silhouette of its castle on top, the final destination of the stage.
The 21 km section from Hornillos del Camino to Castrojeriz is a continuation of the immersion in the landscape of the Meseta. The route is a false flat, with a very gentle descent, ideal for walking at a constant pace. The path runs along dirt tracks surrounded by fields of cultivation.

Halfway through the journey, the pilgrim is surprised by a pleasant surprise when arriving at Hontanas. The village is nestled in a valley and does not appear until almost overhead, emerging as an unexpected oasis. With its stream, stone houses, and hostels, it's a perfect place for a rest stop.

A little after Hontanas, the Camino passes through one of the most iconic places on the route: the ruins of the Convent of San Antón. The path runs directly under the two remaining Gothic arches of the old pilgrim hospital, an image that has been etched in the retina of millions of walkers.

The final part of the stage presents the biggest challenge of the day: the ascent to Alto de Mostelares. It's a short climb, just one kilometer long, but with a very steep slope (over 12%) that demands a last effort. The reward at the top are breathtaking panoramic views of the entire comarca and, at the foot, the historic town of Castrojeriz, our destination.
