Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
Second stage of the Aragonese Way (Somport-Puente la Reina). Leaving Jaca (historic capital of the ancient kingdom of Aragon, with its 11th century Romanesque cathedral and Renaissance citadel), the route heads west through the Aragon valley. The 24 km are undulating with views of the Pyrenees to the north and the Santo Domingo mountain range to the south. Arrés is a small village with a pilgrims' hostel in a historic house, a traditional crossroads before entering the Berdún canal.
The stage that connects Villena with Caudete is a transitional journey that brings the pilgrim from the province of Alicante to Albacete. The profile is a continuous rise and fall along the slopes of the Sierra de Oliva. The landscape is dominated by vineyards and low mountains. It's a beautiful stage, which takes place in a rural and solitary environment. Arrival in Caudete marks the end of the stage. This historic town has a notable heritage. Its church of Saint Catherine, with its impressive Gothic portal, and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace, in Baroque style, are must-see attractions. It's a monumental final to the stage and an excellent starting point for delving into La Mancha.
