Stage Description
Stage of the Southeast Route through the Mancha de Montearagón, in the province of Albacete. The 18 km are flat, crossing fields of cereals, vines and saffron (D.O. Mancha). Minaya is a small municipality in La Mancha with an agricultural tradition and centenary wineries. La Roda, the starting point, is internationally known for its 'miguelitos' (famous puff pastry and cream).
The stage that unites Quiroga with Monforte de Lemos is one of the hardest days on the Camino de Invierno, but also one of the most rewarding. The profile is marked by a long and demanding ascent that takes the pilgrim through the Serra do Courel. The route leaves the valley of Quiroga and begins to gain height in a continuous manner. The route runs through a mountain landscape of great beauty, with oak and beech forests, and panoramic views that expand as one ascends. It is a solitary stage, ideal for introspection and direct contact with wilder nature in Galicia. Once the most difficult part of the ascent has been overcome, the road begins a long descent towards Lemos valley. The arrival in Monforte de Lemos, capital of Ribeira Sacra, marks the end of the stage. The city is dominated by Mount San Vicente, on whose summit is the Monasterio de San Vicente do Pino (now National Parador) and the Torre del Homenaje. Its old town and the Colegio of Our Lady of the Old well deserve an afternoon stroll.
