Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

The first stage in La Rioja by bike, a pleasant rolling day through the wine-growing heart of the region. From Logroño the route skirts La Grajera park and climbs gently among vineyards to Navarrete, a pottery town crowned by the Church of the Assumption. The route continues, undulating, to Nájera, on the banks of the Najerilla and former court of the kings of Pamplona, where the monastery of Santa María la Real stands. The stage ends in Santo Domingo de la Calzada, one of the great pilgrim cities, famous for its cathedral and the legend of the cock and the hen. About 49 kilometres of gentle profile, ideal for enjoying the vineyard landscape and the Riojan villages.
At about 49 kilometres with a gentle, steady climbing profile, this stage opens the Riojan section of the Camino Francés by bike. It is a comfortable, free-rolling day that crosses the heart of the Rioja Alta among vineyards, wineries and villages of deep pilgrim heritage.

Leaving Logroño, the city is left behind via La Grajera park, beside its reservoir, before tackling the climb up to the Alto de San Antón. From there it descends to Navarrete, known for its pottery tradition and for its Church of the Assumption, which houses a spectacular Baroque altarpiece.

The way continues, undulating, among vineyards to Nájera, split in two by the río Najerilla. Former court and pantheon of the kings of Pamplona, it preserves the monastery of Santa María la Real, carved beside the reddish rock that gives the town its name.

The final section, between Azofra and Cirueña, leads to Santo Domingo de la Calzada, a town born of the Camino thanks to the work of the saint who built bridges, roads and a pilgrims' hospital. Its cathedral, which keeps a live henhouse in memory of the famous miracle of the cock and the hen, presides over the end of the day.
