Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

The last stage of the Calzada de los Blendios leads the pilgrim to the Cantabrian Sea. The route is a pleasant walk that gently descends into the Besaya valley, leaving behind industrial landscapes to enter coastal countryside. The route passes through towns such as Torrelavega and Santillana del Mar (although the latter requires a small detour). The end of the day and the route is in the seaside village of Suances, with its beautiful beaches and lively atmosphere, a perfect reward after the long journey from the Meseta.
The final stage of the Calzada de los Blendios is an epilogue that ends at the sea. Starting from Los Corrales de Buelna, the path follows the course of the River Besaya, in a mostly flat and descending profile. The first part of the stage passes through Torrelavega, the main industrial hub of Cantabria, an urban section serving as a service center. Beyond the city, the landscape becomes greener and more rural. The pilgrim has the option to make a highly recommended detour to visit Santillana del Mar, one of Spain's best-preserved medieval villages. Its Romanesque collegiate church and cobblestone streets are a journey through time. The official route continues towards the coast, on an enjoyable stroll through Cantabrian countryside. Arrival in Suances is the grand finale. This popular coastal village, situated at the mouth of San Martín de la Arena estuary, is famous for its beaches, such as La Concha and Los Locos, with the latter a paradise for surfers. Its fishing port and lively seaside promenade are the perfect place to celebrate the end of the route, enjoying seafood cuisine and an spectacular sunset over Cantabria.
