Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

Leaving behind the capital city, this stage enters the Torozos Mountains, a zone of highlands and hills. The profile becomes more demanding, with continuous ups and downs. The landscape is austere in beauty, with wide horizons and a great sense of solitude. The route passes through localities like Wamba, with its unique Mozarabic church. The destination is Peñaflor de Hornija, a small village nestled in a valley, offering a refuge of peace after the journey through the highlands.
The stage connecting Valladolid with Peñaflor de Hornija is a day of change. The pilgrim leaves the Pisuerga valley to ascend to the Montes Torozos, an area of moors that rise above the plateau. The profile is demanding, with an initial climb to reach the moorland. Once up, the terrain smooths out, but the landscape is austere and exposed to the wind. The route passes through a setting of great solitude and beauty. One of the most interesting points on the route is the town of Wamba, which houses the church of Santa María, one of the few examples of Mozarabic architecture preserved in Spain. Its visit is an experience unique for its ossuary and singular structure. After Wamba, the road continues through the moorland until it begins the descent into Hornija valley. The arrival at Peñaflor de Hornija, a small traditional town, is the end of the stage. Its tranquil atmosphere is perfect for rest.
