Stage Description
A gentle coastal day that completes the cycling approach to Santander. From Noja the route links Castillo Siete Villas, Meruelo and the surroundings of Guemes —home to a much-loved pilgrim hostel— before meeting the Trasmiera coast at Galizano. The final stretch runs along the sands of Langre, Loredo and Somo, where the "pedrenera" boat crosses the bay of Santander with bikes on board and drops the pilgrim right in the centre of the Cantabrian capital, opposite the Pereda Gardens. A softly rolling stage through meadows, fields and beaches, rewarded with one of the most beautiful arrivals on the whole Camino del Norte.
The stage between Noja and Santander completes the cycling split of the classic Laredo-Santander day: 28 gentle kilometres along the Trasmiera coast, crowned by the boat crossing of the bay of Santander.
From Noja you pedal inland through Castillo Siete Villas and San Miguel de Meruelo, among meadows and small farming hamlets. Shortly after, the route passes Guemes, whose pilgrim hostel, founded by the priest Ernesto Bustio, is one of the best-loved on the entire Camino del Norte.
At Galizano the route returns to the sea and strings together the sands of Langre, Loredo and Somo, a paradise of Cantabrian surfing. The surface alternates quiet local roads with short stretches of well-kept track, always suitable for touring bikes.
At Somo, the "pedrenera" boat crosses the bay with bikes on board and lands opposite the Pereda Gardens, in the very centre of Santander. The Cantabrian capital welcomes the pilgrim with its cathedral, its seafront promenade and a full range of services to prepare the next day towards Comillas.
