Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

The first stage of the Portuguese Coastal Way is a transition journey that takes the pilgrim out of the great city of Porto. The route runs along the coast, through an enjoyable seaside promenade and wooden walkways that protect the dunes. It's a flat stage with constant Atlantic Ocean presence, ideal for acclimatization. The route passes by Matosinhos, famous for its fish, before entering a landscape of beaches and small settlements. Arrival in Labruge, a peaceful coastal parish, offers the first rest in a natural setting.
The Portuguese Coastal Way of the Camino starts in the majestic Porto Cathedral. The first day is a long journey that allows pilgrims to leave the city by following the coastline line. After descending into Ribeira do Douro, the path seeks the coast and heads north. The initial stretch passes through the city of Matosinhos, an important fishing port and a culinary paradise for seafood lovers. From there on, the landscape becomes much more natural and spectacular. The route follows a series of wooden walkways that wind over the dune system, protecting it and offering pilgrims privileged access to Atlantic beaches. It's a flat and very pleasant walk, with the sound of waves and sea breeze as constant companions. The path passes through small fishing villages in an area of great beauty. The final stage ends in Labruge, a small coastal parish that offers the necessary tranquility for the first rest of the pilgrim, a perfect place to absorb the ocean's beauty and prepare for the next stages.
