Stage Description

The first day of the Portuguese Coastal Way is a long walk that draws the pilgrim out of the heart of Porto and leads them, always beside the sea, to historic Vila do Conde. After descending to the Ribeira do Douro, the route seeks the coastline and heads north through Matosinhos, a renowned fishing port and a paradise for chargrilled fish. From there the path turns natural and luminous: miles of wooden boardwalks over the dune system, Atlantic beaches and small fishing villages. It is a flat stage, yet demanding because of its length, ideal for those who want to merge with the Atlantic from the very first day. The arrival in Vila do Conde, with its monumental Monastery of Santa Clara overlooking the river Ave, rewards the effort.
The Portuguese Coastal Way sets off from the majestic Cathedral of Porto, high above the city. The first day is a long, flat walk that lets the pilgrim leave the metropolis behind while faithfully following the line of the sea. After descending to the Ribeira do Douro and making for the river mouth, the path strikes out along the coast heading north. The first great landmark is Matosinhos, a major fishing port and one of the great gastronomic temples of chargrilled fish, where many pilgrims make their first stop. Once the urban area is left behind, the landscape changes completely: the route runs over a string of wooden boardwalks that wind through the dunes, protecting them and offering privileged access to endless beaches. The murmur of the waves and the Atlantic breeze accompany the walker for hours, over comfortable ground but with considerable mileage that is best tackled calmly. The path links small coastal settlements and sandy stretches until it nears the estuary of the river Ave. Once across the bridge, the pilgrim enters Vila do Conde, a town of deep seafaring roots presided over by the imposing Monastery of Santa Clara and its historic shipyard. Its old quarter, with its serene streets, invites a well-earned rest and a chance to take in the beauty of the ocean before continuing the journey.
