Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

This stage links Palas de Rei with Melide along a rolling and very enjoyable route, dotted with hamlets, stone crosses and small medieval bridges. After leaving Palas, the Camino drops down to San Xulián do Camiño and Casanova, then crosses the river Pambre and enters the province of A Coruña through the picturesque spot of Leboreiro, with its Romanesque church of Santa María. Before Melide it crosses the river Catasol and the characteristic medieval bridge of O Furelos. The arrival in Melide, where the Camino Francés joins the Primitivo, rewards the pilgrim with the taste of its famous pulpo á feira. It is a day of medium difficulty, with constant ups and downs between woods and Galician farmland.
The Palas de Rei to Melide stage covers close to 15 kilometres through the farmland of Lugo and A Coruña, on a profile of constant climbs and descents which, without any great difficulty, keeps the walker entertained. Palas de Rei, the end of one of the classic stages of the Camino Francés, sends the pilgrim off with an initial descent towards the valleys that surround it.

The route passes through San Xulián do Camiño, with its small Romanesque church, and through Casanova, before reaching the river Pambre. Shortly afterwards the Camino crosses the provincial boundary and enters the lands of A Coruña at Leboreiro, one of the jewels of the journey, with its church of Santa María and its traditional houses set around cobbled paving.

After Leboreiro, the route descends to the river Seco and the Disicabo area, before tackling the final section towards O Furelos, where a magnificent four-arched medieval bridge crosses the river of the same name at the gates of Melide.

Melide is entered through its old quarter, marked by the oldest stone cross in Galicia and the chapel of San Roque. Melide, the crossroads where the Camino Primitivo merges with the Francés, welcomes the pilgrim with every service and, above all, with its renowned pulpeirías, an essential gastronomic stop before facing the final stretch towards Santiago.
