Stage Description
This stage descends from the Torozos Mountains to enter the Tierra de Campos region. The profile is mainly descending and flat. The landscape returns to that of large cereal plains, with an infinite horizon. This is a comfortable day that allows for rapid progress. The destination is Medina de Rioseco, "The City of Admirals", one of the most monumental villages in Castilla y León. Its impressive church complex, its porticoed streets and the Canal of Castilla make it a first-order cultural stop.
The stage between Peñaflor de Hornija and Medina de Rioseco is a transition phase that leads the pilgrim from the pastures of the Montes Torozos to the heart of the Land of Campos. The profile is very favorable, with a gentle descent. The landscape opens up again, and the fields of grain return to being the main protagonists. The path runs on dirt tracks in an environment of great tranquility. The arrival at Medina de Rioseco is the big prize of the day. Known as "The City of Castile's Admirals", this historic village has an exceptional monumental heritage. Its churches, such as Santa María de Mediavilla, Santiago or Santa Cruz, house genuine treasures of Renaissance and Baroque art. Its porticoed streets, its dock on the Canal of Castile and its lively atmosphere make it one of the most interesting stops on the Madrid Way. It is essential to dedicate time to explore its wonders.
