Stage Description
Leaving the Valladolid area behind, this stage heads into the Montes Torozos, an area of moorland and hills. The profile becomes more demanding, with a constant up and down. The landscape has an austere beauty, with wide horizons and a great sense of solitude. The route passes through places such as Wamba, with its unique Mozarabic church. The destination is Peñaflor de Hornija, a small village set in a valley, which offers a haven of peace after the crossing of the moorland.
The stage linking Puente Duero with Peñaflor de Hornija is a day of change. The pilgrim leaves the valley of the Duero to climb up to the Montes Torozos, a district of moorland rising above the meseta. The profile is demanding, with an initial climb to reach the moorland. Once on top the terrain eases, but the landscape is austere and exposed to the wind. The way crosses a setting of great solitude and beauty. One of the most interesting points on the route is the village of Wamba, home to the church of Santa María, one of the few examples of Mozarabic architecture preserved in Spain. Visiting it is a unique experience. After Wamba, the way continues across the moorland until it begins the descent towards the valley of Hornija. Arriving at Peñaflor de Hornija, a small village of traditional architecture, is the end of the stage. Its quiet atmosphere is perfect for resting.
