Stage Description
A quiet and rural stage that leaves the elegant city of Pontevedra by crossing the historic Puente do Burgo over the River Lérez. The profile is gentle, with moderate undulations through a landscape of Albariño vineyards, oak forests, and small Galician villages. It is a perfect day to enjoy inland Galicia, with its shaded paths and the sound of streams. The atmosphere is one of great tranquillity and the pilgrim can walk at a relaxed pace. Barro is a small rural village offering basic services and peaceful rest.
The stage between Pontevedra and Barro marks the beginning of a transition from the city towards the more rural and authentic Galicia. The path leaves Pontevedra, one of Galicia's most elegant cities, crossing the River Lérez via the emblematic medieval Puente do Burgo.
Once outside the city, the landscape changes rapidly. The urban surroundings give way to a mosaic of D.O. Rías Baixas vineyards, where Albariño vines grow on the characteristic granite trellises. The paths wind between moss-covered stone walls and centuries-old hórreos.
The profile is gentle, with soft undulations that pose no significant challenge. The path passes through small villages where rural Galician life manifests in all its essence: chickens pecking along the paths, family vegetable gardens, and smoke rising from chimneys. Oak and chestnut forests provide generous shade.
Several crystal-clear streams flowing down from the hills are crossed, creating a very pleasant soundscape. In spring, the path margins fill with wildflowers and birdsong accompanies the pilgrim throughout the day.
Barro is a small but welcoming village, with pilgrim accommodation and a bar or two where one can replenish energy. It is an ideal place to rest in a rural setting before continuing towards Caldas de Reis.
