Pontevedra, the capital of the Rías Baixas, is one of the most rewarding and beautiful urban stops on the Portuguese Way. The city welcomes pilgrims with an exceptionally well-preserved pedestrian historic center, a maze of plazas and cobblestone streets filled with life, terraces, and blazoned buildings. The spiritual heart of the Jacobean route in the city is the Sanctuary of the Virgin Peregrina, with its singular conch shell-shaped plant, where pilgrims usually stop to pray. The Basilica of Saint Mary the Greater, with its gilded façade, is another monumental gem. For the pilgrim, Pontevedra is an oasis of services, culture, and gastronomy. Walking through the Plaza de la Leña, the Plaza de la Verdura, or along the Lérez River is a true delight. The city has won numerous international awards for its people-centered urban model, making it a particularly pleasant place for the tired walker.
