Stage Description
This stage of the Portuguese Coastal Way is an authentic delight for the senses. The route advances northwards along the Atlantic coast, through a series of wooden boardwalks that protect the dune system. It's a practically flat journey with constant sea breeze and the sound of waves as companions. The path traverses extensive beaches and small fishing villages. The final stage ends in the pleasant town of Esposende, situated at the mouth of the Cávado river, a place of great natural beauty that invites rest.
The stage between Póvoa de Varzim and Esposende is one of the most representative and beautiful sections of the Portuguese Coastal Way. Along the journey, the pilgrim walks for the most part along magnificent wooden walkways that wind over the dunes, protecting this fragile ecosystem and offering privileged access to Atlantic beaches.
It's a practically flat walk, ideal for enjoying the landscape without great physical effort. The ocean is the absolute star, with its golden sand beaches, waves, and refreshing marine breeze. The route is perfectly signposted and allows for total immersion in the coastal environment of northern Portugal.
Small fishing villages are crossed along the way, where it's possible to stop for a coffee and enjoy local hospitality. The feeling of freedom and connection with nature is a constant throughout the entire stage.
The final stretch arrives at Esposende, an animated tourist town located at the mouth of the Cávado River. Its location within the Natural Park of the North Coast gives it great scenic value. The town offers all the necessary services for the pilgrim, and its beach and marina are perfect for relaxing after the walk. It's an ideal final stage to enjoy a sunset over the Atlantic.
