Stage Description

Leaving behind the Holy Valley, this stage enters into the Sabine region, a land of hills and olive groves. It is a long day with an undulating profile and continuous ups and downs that require good effort. The landscape is of great beauty, with medieval towns perched on the hills. The end of the stage is the impressive view of Rocca Sinibalda Castle, a fortress with a unique eagle-like shape that dominates the valley. It's a day that combines the hardness of the road with the reward of a unique heritage.
The Rieti to Rocca Sinibalda stage is a 20.1 km journey that introduces the pilgrim into the beautiful and undulating region of the Sabina. The route leaves behind the flat plain of Rieti (405 m) to enter a landscape of hills covered in olive groves and forests. The profile of the stage is a continuous up-and-down, with no great passes but an accumulated gradient that makes it demanding. The route follows rural paths and roads, passing through small medieval villages such as Ornaro. Solitude and the beauty of the landscape are constant. The high point of the stage is arriving at Rocca Sinibalda (530 m). This town is dominated by its impressive castle, a masterpiece of Renaissance military architecture designed by Baldassarre Peruzzi with a singular form that evokes an eagle. The view of the castle, perched on a hill, is one of the most powerful images of the entire San Benedetto Way. It's a stage that rewards physical effort with unique architectural heritage and serene countryside beauty.
