Stage Description
After the spiritual intensity of Poggio Bustone, this stage is an enjoyable descent for most part. The path takes the pilgrim from the Franciscan sanctuary to the historic city of Rieti, considered the geographical center of Italy. The route offers views of the Holy Valley and passes by the Sanctuary of La Foresta, another of the Franciscan sites. Arrival in Rieti, a city with all services and a rich heritage, is a comfortable and culturally enriching endpoint.
The Poggio Bustone to Rieti stage is a 16.2 km journey with a predominantly descending profile, allowing pilgrims to comfortably reach the capital of Holy Valley. The route begins at the Sanctuary of Poggio Bustone (818 m) and descends down the mountain slope, offering stunning views of the Rieti plain. The route passes by the Sanctuary of La Foresta, another of the four Franciscan sanctuaries in the valley, where Saint Francis composed "The Canticle of Creatures". A visit to this peaceful place is highly recommended. The final stretch of the stage is a pleasant stroll through the plain, following rural roads until Rieti's entrance (405 m). This city, whose geographical centre of Italy is marked on its main square, is an important communication hub and a service centre. Its heritage, including the Cathedral, Papal Palace, and medieval walls, deserves a detailed visit. It is a stage that combines the spirituality of Franciscan sanctuaries with the richness of a city that has been a witness to the passage of popes and pilgrims for centuries.
