Stage Description

The first stage of the Primitive Way is one of the most demanding. The ascent to Alto del Escamplero puts the pilgrim's strength to the test. It is a day of great beauty, that traverses the valleys and mountains of Asturias. The arrival in Grado, a lively town with an animated market and a pretty old quarter, is well-deserved rest. It is a stage that marks the hard and authentic character of the Primitive Way.
The first stage of the Primitivo Way is a 25-kilometer journey that starts in Oviedo (230 m) and ascends to Escamplero Hill. The path follows an alpine profile, with continuous ascent exceeding 600 meters in altitude. The route traverses a spectacular landscape, with dense forests, deep valleys, and panoramic views lost in the horizon. It is a very solitary journey that requires excellent physical preparation and good planning. The wild beauty of the surroundings is the great reward for the effort. After conquering the pass, it begins a long descent to Grado (100 m), a lively market town with an old charming quarter.
