Stage Description
A transitional stage between the regions of Centre-Val de Loire and Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The roughly 28 km leave Touraine behind and enter the department of Vienne, in Poitou. The landscape is rolling, among fields and woods. Dangé-Saint-Romain is a small riverside town on the Vienne with a well-preserved rural centre.
A long day that takes the pilgrim from Touraine into Poitou. Between Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine and Dangé-Saint-Romain the Way leaves the Centre-Val de Loire region and enters Nouvelle-Aquitaine through the Vienne department. The profile is gentle, with a gradual descent towards the valleys of the Creuse and the Vienne.
The first stretch crosses the plateau south of Sainte-Maure on farm tracks. At Draché, a short distance from the route, stands a large pierced menhir known as the Pierre Percée, one of the most notable megaliths in Touraine.
The route then passes through Maillé, a village marked by the massacre of 1944, when a large part of its inhabitants were murdered and the village set on fire; a memorial house recalls what happened. Next comes La Celle-Saint-Avant, with a church of Romanesque origin and basic services.
At Port-de-Piles the way crosses the Creuse very close to its confluence with the Vienne. The river marks the historic boundary between Touraine and Poitou, and with it the architecture and landscape gradually change. On the south bank, Les Ormes preserves the château that belonged to the d'Argenson family, with its outbuildings aligned along the old road.
The final kilometres follow the Vienne valley to Dangé-Saint-Romain, a commune made up of two settlements on either side of the river, joined by a bridge. It is a quiet place, with limited shops and accommodation, where it is wise to have booked. After a demanding stage on account of its length, the wooded banks of the Vienne offer a peaceful rest.
