Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

This is a short and gentle phase that enters the heart of the Palatine Mountains. It's an enjoyable walk that connects two of the region's major Romanesque landmarks. The path runs through a river valley landscape and oak forest. Arrival in Aguilar de Campoo, a village with an impressive monumental heritage, is the day's highlight. Known as "the cookie village", Aguilar is dominated by its castle and houses the Monastery of Santa María la Real, home to the Foundation that has promoted Romanesque study throughout Spain.
The stage between Santa María de Mave and Aguilar de Campoo is a short but culturally rich journey. The route runs over gentle undulations in a beautiful natural environment at the gates of the Palentine Mountain Natural Park. The main attraction of the stage is its destination: Aguilar de Campoo. This village is one of the most important historic-artistic complexes in Castile and León. Its profile is dominated by the castle that rises on a rocky outcrop. Its old town houses a treasure trove of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, highlighting the Colegiata of St Michael and above all, the Monastery of Santa María la Real. This beautifully restored monastery is the seat of the Santa María la Real Foundation, a world reference center for the study and dissemination of Romanesque art. In addition to its heritage, Aguilar is famous for its leather industry, so a stop to taste its cookies is almost obligatory. It's a perfect end to the stage for those who love art, history, and nature.
