Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

Leaving behind the monumental Segovia, this stage enters into the Castilian plain. It is a long and hilly journey, mainly flat, that runs through a landscape of cereal fields and pine forests. The route passes through the Segovian countryside in an environment of great solitude and infinite horizons. This stage is for introspection and to feel the vastness of the Meseta. Arrival at Santa María la Real de Nieva, a village with an important monastery and a beautiful Gothic-Mudéjar cloister, offers well-deserved rest and a rich final stage of cultural heritage.
The exit from the spectacular city of Segovia allows for a radical change in landscape. This long stage immerses the pilgrim in the Castile plain, known as "Segovian countryside". The profile is predominantly flat, with gentle undulations that do not present any difficulty. The route runs along long dirt tracks that traverse a sea of cereal fields, dotted with some pine forests. It's a solitary journey, ideal for meditation, where the pilgrim faces the vastness of the Castilian landscape. The absence of shade over long stretches requires good sun protection. Passes through several small towns like Zamarramala, with its famous church, and Valseca. The final stage ends in Santa María la Real de Nieva. This historic village houses the Monastery of Our Lady of the Subterranean, whose church and above all, its magnificent cloister, a jewel of Gothic-Mudéjar is a must-visit. It's an end to the stage that combines the hardness of the plain with an artistic reward of first class.
