Stage Description

This stage marks the return to Castile and León, to the province of Palencia. The profile is predominantly descending, a pleasant walk that enters the Palentine Mountains. The landscape is of great beauty, with oak forests and a smoother relief. The destination is Aguilar de Campoo, one of the most monumental villages in the region. Famous for its cookies and Roman heritage, with its castle and Santa María la Real monastery, it's a cultural stop of first order.
The stage between Reinosa and Aguilar de Campoo is a transition day that takes the mountain pilgrim from Cantabrian Mountain to Palentine Mountain. The profile is very favorable, with a gentle descent. The landscape is of great beauty, with oak forests and an undulating relief. The path passes through several small villages that preserve the charm of traditional architecture. Arrival in Aguilar de Campoo is the big prize of the day. This village is one of the most important historic-artistic ensembles in Castilla y León. Its profile is dominated by the castle which rises over a rock. Its old town houses a treasure trove of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, highlighting the Colegiata of St. Michael and above all, the Monastery of Santa María la Real. Additionally to its heritage, Aguilar is famous for its leather industry. It's a perfect final stage for those who love art, history and nature.
