Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
This long stage marks the entry into the province of León and the convergence with the Camino Francés. The route is entirely flat, one last stretch through the Tierra de Campos. Arrival in the historic village of Sahagún is a moment of great symbolism. A cradle of Mudéjar art and one of the most important monastic centers of the Middle Ages, Sahagún welcomes the pilgrim with an exceptional heritage. The union with the Camino Francés marks the end of the solo adventure and incorporation into the large flow of pilgrims.
The stage that connects Mayorga to Sahagún is the last of the Madrid Route as an independent route. The profile is completely flat, a final stroll through the Tierra de Campos before the great convergence. The path advances over dirt tracks in a tranquil environment. Arrival at Sahagún, already in the province of León, is a very special moment. Here, the pilgrim of the Madrid Route joins the French Way. The atmosphere changes completely, and the solitude of previous stages gives way to the bustle and multiculturalism of the main route. Sahagún is a village of immense historical and artistic importance. It is the birthplace of Mudéjar art, its churches of San Tirso and San Lorenzo are two masterpieces. The ruins of the Monastery of St. Benedict, one of the most powerful of Christendom, and the Pilgrim Sanctuary complete an exceptional heritage.
