Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

This stage is a long and spectacular coastal journey that takes the pilgrim to the border with Spain. The route is mainly flat and runs through a beautiful landscape, alternating walks on the beach, paths through pine forests, and sections through small maritime villages. Atlantic views are constant. The final stage ends in the enchanting town of Caminha, located at the mouth of the River Miño. Its medieval old town and strategic location, with Spain visible across the river, make it a stage end of great charm and symbolism.
The stage between Viana do Castelo and Caminha is one of the longest on the Portuguese Coastal Way, but also one of the most rewarding. The profile is mainly flat, allowing for comfortable walking. The route follows the coastline northwards, through a landscape that combines extensive beaches, dune systems, and dense pine forests. It's a day to enjoy nature in its purest form. The route passes by small coastal towns such as Vila Praia de Âncora, an animated summer resort with a beautiful beach. The final stretch approaches the mouth of the Miño River, the natural border between Portugal and Spain. Arrival in Caminha marks the end of the stage. This medieval town, situated in a strategic enclave, boasts an enchanting old town, with its Clock Tower and Conselheiro Silva Torres Square. From its shores, the Monte Santa Trega can be seen, already in Galician territory. The atmosphere in Caminha is one of farewell to Portugal and anticipation for the imminent passage into Spain.
