Stage Description

This stage is one of the most beautiful and complete sections of the Portuguese Coastal Way. The route combines interior stretches through forests and villages with spectacular sections along the coast. The journey is long and has an undulating profile. The main prize is arriving at Viana do Castelo, one of Portugal's most beautiful cities in the north. Located at the mouth of the Lima River and crowned by the Sanctuary of Saint Lucy, Viana offers a monumental historic quarter, a bustling port, and unforgettable panoramic views. It is a must-see stop.
The stage that unites Marinas with Viana do Castelo is a long but exceptional journey. The route combines sections through the interior, through forests and rural areas, with spectacular stretches along the coast. The path leaves Esposende and enters a landscape of rolling fields and gentle hills. Several small villages are crossed, where traditional Portuguese Minho architecture can be appreciated. The terrain is a continuous up and down, but without extreme slopes. The second part of the stage returns to the coast, offering spectacular views of the ocean. Walking along paths that border cliffs and crossing several beautiful beaches. Arrival in Viana do Castelo is the climax point. The city is situated in a privileged enclave, at the mouth of the Lima River and protected by the Monte de Santa Luzia. Its historic center is a maze of charming streets with Renaissance and Manueline buildings. It's essential to climb either on foot or in funicular to the Sanctuary of Santa Luzia. From its dome, one gets some of the most famous and spectacular panoramic views in all of Portugal.
