Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

A meseta stage that leaves the Páramo behind for good and enters Maragato lands. From Villadangos del Páramo, the Camino advances between irrigated fields and poplar groves to San Martín del Camino and Hospital de Órbigo, where one of the longest and finest medieval bridges on the route awaits, the setting of the legendary Passo Honroso of Suero de Quiñones. After Villares and Santibáñez de Valdeiglesias, the route climbs to the stone cross of Santo Toribio, a viewpoint with a first sight of Astorga, and descends to enter the city. Astorga, the Maragato capital, rewards the pilgrim with its cathedral, Gaudí's Episcopal Palace and its famous cocido maragato.
