Discover Almería

Almería, the city of light and cinema, offers the easternmost starting point for the Mozarabic Way. Starting a pilgrimage here is beginning an adventure of unique landscapes and spectacular contrasts. The city is dominated by its imposing Alcazaba, the largest Moorish fortress in Spain, offering breathtaking views of the port and the city. Pilgrims can begin their journey from the Cathedral-Fortress of the Encarnación, a singular temple built for defense against pirates. The path starts from Almería to venture into the Tabernas Desert, Europe's only desert, a dry landscape with cinematographic beauty that has been the setting for numerous western films. This first part of the route is demanding and requires good planning. It is a unique starting point on the Jacobean route, an experience combining the history of its Alcazaba, the aridity of the desert, and the promise of green landscapes waiting further north, along the Via de la Plata.
