Belchite

Symbol of Spain's Historical Memory. Belchite, with the ruins of its Old Town, is an overwhelming and reflective stop on the Way of St James.

Discover Belchite

Belchite is a stop that leaves no pilgrim indifferent. The Zaragoza town is sadly famous for the ruins of its Old Town, destroyed during one of the most brutal battles of the Spanish Civil War. Visiting this ghost town, with its stripped churches and ruined houses, is an exercise in historical memory and reflection on the horrors of war. Next to the ruins, a new town was built, offering all services. For the Camino de Castellón walker, it's a deeply emotional stage, a place for silence, respect, and contemplation.
