The city of Ciudad Real, the capital of the province, is the starting point of the Camino Manchego, a Jacobean route that heads north to connect with Toledo and the Levante Route. Founded by Alfonso X the Wise, the city offers pilgrims an urban and cultural start to their journey in the heart of La Mancha. Its most iconic monument is the Puerta de Toledo, a Gothic Mudéjar style gate, one of the ancient gates of the wall. The Cathedral of Santa María del Prado and Santiago's church are also points of interest. The city is deeply connected to the figure of Don Quixote, and the Museum of Don Quixote is highly recommended for immersing oneself in the Cervantine universe before embarking on the journey.
