Guadalajara, the capital of Alcarria, is the starting point of the Camino Mendocino, a Jacobean route that connects with the Camino de Madrid, following the footsteps of the influential Mendoza family. For the pilgrim, beginning the journey here is to start with a Renaissance jewel: the Palacio del Infantado, with its spectacular façade and Patio of the Lions. The city offers an interesting tour of its heritage, which includes the Cathedral of Saint Mary, the Pantheon of the Duchess of Seville and the remains of its old Alcázar. It is a quiet beginning to pilgrimage, away from the crowds of other routes, that allows for a peaceful preparation. Guadalajara provides all necessary services for the walker before venturing into the landscapes of Alcarria and the Sierra Norte.
