Discover Jaén

Jaén, the capital of the Holy Kingdom and world center of olive oil, is an important starting point for one of the branches of the Camino Mozárabe. The city, nestled at the foot of the Santa Catalina hill, welcomes the pilgrim with the imposing silhouette of its Castle and the majesty of its Cathedral of the Assumption, a masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance by Andrés de Vandelvira. Starting the Camino de Santiago here is beginning a journey through the characteristic Andalusian landscape of the "sea of olives", a horizon of hills covered in olive trees that loses itself in the distance. The old town of Jaén, with its Arab baths (the largest preserved in Spain) and the ancient neighborhood of the Magdalena, deserves a peaceful stroll. The city offers all necessary services for the pilgrim to prepare for the route, which heads west in search of the connection with Córdoba. It is an initiation of pilgrimage that combines a rich heritage with a unique agricultural landscape, an immersion in olive oil culture before continuing along the Via de la Plata.
