The Sanctuary of La Verna is one of the most sacred and revered places in Franciscanism. In this rocky and isolated spot of the Tuscan Apennines, St. Francis of Assisi received the stigmata in 1224. For the pilgrim, arriving at La Verna is the culmination of a spiritual journey. The sanctuary, surrounded by a monumental forest, consists of a basilica, several chapels (such as that of the Stigmata) and places of profound prayer. The atmosphere of silence, faith, and nature is overwhelming. It is an indispensable stop on the Cammino di San Francesco, a place for reflection, prayer, and connection with the essence of "The Poor Little Man" of Assisi.
