Portomarín is one of the most singular and historically rich villages on the Camino Francés. The original town lies beneath the waters of Belesar Reservoir, but its spirit and most important monuments were saved and moved stone by stone to a higher location. Its imposing church-fortress of St John, from the Order of the Knights of St John, dominates the main square and is a magnificent example of Romanesque architecture. Crossing the long bridge over the Miño River and climbing up the ancient Roman staircase is a welcome to this vibrant and lively pilgrim town.
