Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
This stage crosses the border between Almeria and Granada through the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. The 18 km climb progressively through the valley of the Bayárcal river with views of the peaks of Mulhacén (3,479 m) and Veleta (3,396 m), the highest in the Peninsula. Huéneja is a small town in the Marquesado del Zenete, a historic region north of the Sierra Nevada with a strong Mudejar architectural tradition.
This long stage enters the province of Toledo, on a flat and monotonous route. The arrival in Tembleque is a monumental reward. Its Plaza Mayor, one of Spain's most beautiful squares, is a jewel of popular baroque. It is a day of great physical effort that is widely rewarded with an end loaded with art and history.
