Stage Description
This stage continues across the Valencian plain, on a route that draws the pilgrim closer to the peninsula's interior. The landscape remains dominated by orange groves and other irrigated crops. It is a transitional day, with no great inclines, allowing for a steady pace. The highlight of the day is the arrival at the monumental city of Xàtiva, birthplace of the Borja papas. The imposing silhouette of its castle, perched on the hillside, welcomes the walker from afar, promising a stage end filled with history and beauty.
The stage from Algemesí to Xàtiva is a 31.2 km journey that delves into the heart of Valencia province. The route is mostly flat, but starts presenting gentle undulations as it approaches Xàtiva, anticipating the change in terrain. Starting from Algemesí (18 m), the path traverses an agricultural landscape, passing through towns such as Alzira, a significant city on the Júcar River banks. The route combines rural road sections with more urbanized areas, offering a complete view of the region. As progress is made, the imposing silhouette of Xàtiva Castle begins to dominate the horizon, serving as a beacon and motivation for the pilgrim. Arrival in Xàtiva (115 m) is one of the most anticipated moments on this stage of the Levante Camino. The city, birthplace of the influential Borja (or Borgia) family, boasts an exceptional monumental heritage. Its castle, with its walls and towers, offers spectacular views and a journey into medieval history. The old town, featuring the Colegiata Basílica of Santa María (The Seu) and the Royal Hospital, invites exploration. It's an stage that rewards the pilgrim after a pleasant journey with one of the most historically significant cities in the Valencian Community.
