Xàtiva

Monumental city on the Levant Way. Its imposing castle, cradle of the Borgia Popes, offers the pilgrim a stop with history, art, and breathtaking views.

Discover Xàtiva

Xàtiva, one of the historically most important cities in the ancient Kingdom of Valencia, is an indispensable monumental stop on the Levante Route. Its profile is dominated by its impressive Castle, a double fortress of Iberian and Roman origin that stretches across the top of the mountain, offering breathtaking panoramic views. For the pilgrim, the climb to the castle is a challenge rewarded with an open-air history lesson. Xàtiva was the birthplace of the papal family Borja (Calixto III and Alexander VI), and its legacy is palpable in the Collegiate Basilica of Santa María (the Seu) and numerous churches and palaces in its old town. The city, which was set ablaze by King Philip V's troops (hence the nickname "socarrats" for its inhabitants), has managed to revive and preserve a rich heritage. With all necessary services for the walker and delicious cuisine, Xàtiva is a culturally enriching stop, a place to immerse oneself in the splendor of the Kingdom of Valencia on the Jacobean route to Santiago.
