Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

A stage of the Camino de la Lana, a historic route used by transhumant shepherds and wool traders between Alicante and Burgos. The 15 km link Almansa (with its spectacular castle on the Cerro del Águila) with Alpera, in the middle of the Sierra del Mugrón. The landscape is of Mediterranean scrubland, vineyards and almond crops. Alpera is famous for its prehistoric cave paintings (World Heritage).
This "superstage" connects Jacobean capital with the end of ancient world in a single day, a challenge only suitable for cyclists or very well-prepared pilgrims. The route passes through rural Galicia, with a constant "break-neck" profile. It goes by Negreira and Olveiroa. The big prize is arriving at the coast and seeing the Atlantic Ocean. The day ends at the Lighthouse of Finisterre, a magical place to watch sunset and finish the pilgrimage.
