This stage of the Portuguese Way enters into authentic rural Portugal. The profile is a continuous rise and fall through a landscape of eucalyptus and pine forests, dotted with small villages. It's a day of great beauty and tranquility, that requires constant effort. The route traverses broken terrain before beginning the descent towards Cernache. This small village, on the outskirts of Coimbra, offers a final breath in a rural setting before arriving at the large university town.
The journey between Alvorge and Cernache is an immersion in rural and forest Portugal. The road winds through a terrain of continuous undulations, a "thorn bush" that traverses a landscape dominated by eucalyptus, pine, and oak forests. The route, well signposted, combines dirt tracks with tranquil local roads. It's an episode to enjoy solitude and silence, accompanied by the scent of the forest. Passengers go through several small villages that preserve their traditional charm. Arrival in Cernache marks the prelude to Coímbra. This small town, although small, offers the necessary services for pilgrims and serves as a strategic rest stop before the final short journey to one of Portugal's most important cities. The atmosphere in Cernache is calm, allowing the walker a restorative night's sleep before immersing themselves in the bustle and grandeur of Coímbra.
